The Sternoclavicular (SC) Joint is the joint connecting the sternum (breastbone) and the clavicle (collarbone) and is responsible for connecting the shoulder with the arms. It is supported and strengthened by four main ligaments (anterior and posterior, interclavicular, and costoclavicular). Injuries to this joint usually occur when significant force or trauma causes sprains on any of these supporting ligaments. Severity of these sprains vary depending on the damage incurred, ranging from microscopic tears (minor) to complete rupture and breakage (major) that often lead to full joint dislocation. While SC Joint injuries are generally uncommon, they can occur especially when the SC joint experiences a significant blow or trauma.
The most common symptom for this injury is severe pain int the SC joint. Depending on its severity, however, displacement and joint instability can also be observed. While most minor SC joint injuries can be treated with rest, medication, and physical therapy, more serious cases may need surgery and further treatment to fully heal.
